EduCare is proud to celebrate the recent humanitarian work of our colleague Maria Andreoli, who generously volunteered her time and expertise to support mental health education in Vanuatu. Her efforts have made a lasting impact on both the local school community and broader public awareness of mental health in the region.
A Mission of Compassion and Education
Maria travelled with Amazing Facts Oceania, a Christian organisation that brought together a team of medical professionals and community speakers. While her husband contributed as a speaker, Maria focused on mental health education and counselling, working with students during the day and engaging the wider community in the evenings.
To ensure privacy and comfort, a large white tent was set up at a local high school where Maria offered one-on-one counselling and lifestyle support. She also delivered educational sessions to over 800 students, covering topics such as emotional wellbeing, coping strategies, and safe relationships — many of which had never been discussed openly before.
Mental health awareness is very limited in Vanuatu… Many disclosed they had never had a space where they could discuss these issues. It was rewarding to see their openness, engagement, and willingness to reflect on their own wellbeing.”

Addressing Urgent Needs
Maria’s work extended beyond the school gates. She visited the only mental health service on the island that supports survivors of domestic violence, where she trained counsellors in trauma-informed care for children. During her evening talks, she was approached by women in dangerous situations and was able to connect them with this vital service.
Her presence helped raise awareness that violence is never acceptable, and that help is available — a message that resonated deeply with many in the community.
Building a Sustainable Future
Maria’s visit sparked real change. The school leadership has since committed to:
- Establishing a permanent space for student wellbeing support
- Exploring teacher training in mental health
- Seeking funding for a dedicated support person, such as a chaplain or counsellor
Maria also provided a detailed report to assist the school in applying for funding — a step toward long-term, sustainable mental health care in the region.
The combination of education, counselling, and these plans helps support students’ wellbeing and builds the foundation for ongoing mental health care at the school and in the community of Vanuatu.”

Please join us in congratulating and thanking Maria for her incredible contribution.
