Dr Fernando has joined the team of four Consultant Psychiatrists at EDUCARE and works in close collaboration with the multi-disciplinary team within the practice. Dr Fernando has previously served within Hunter New England Area Health for the past eight years, and continues to work part-time for Newcastle Mental Health Service as an outpatient staff specialist psychiatrist at James Fletcher Hospital.

Dr Fernando is passionate about understanding psychiatric illnesses caused by complex interactions between psychological, social and biological factors affecting each individual. Trained and worked both locally and overseas, Dr Fernando has developed a broader perspective and experience in understanding and treating psychiatric illnesses. Dr Fernando obtained his PhD from the University of Newcastle and Master of Biostatistics from the University of Sydeny, which has enabled him to pursue his research passion to understand psychiatric illnesses using mathematical and computer models. He is affiliated with Hunter Medical Research Institute and the Centre for Brain and Mental Health Research.
